Seeds & Sprouts

These are two hour classes limited to 5 students each class. Class will be held on family property in Hayden. We will send you location information upon class sign-up.

This class is for kids who have either no or minimal amounts of gardening knowledge or experience.

Students will learn through hands-on and fun activities starting with learning where seeds come from to planting their own plant starts.  In between, they will learn all about soils, the role of the sun and temperature, water sources, and plant care.  Each and every topic will have a hands-on component and we all will get dirty before the class is over – guaranteed!

The following is a synopsis of the class:

       Planting a garden

  • The class will begin with plant reproduction and will include dissection of plants and seeds
  • Through sight and feel, each student will learn soil types and the qualities of each
  • Each student will learn to test soil temperature by using a soil thermometer
  • Different activities will demonstrate the process of photosynthesis and the importance of the sun
  • Water is a critical component of gardens and the students will experience the different sources available
  • Basic plant care will be demonstrated
  • Plant seeds and plants applying the concepts learned

Buds & Blooms

These are two-hour classes limited to 5 students each class. Class will be held on family property in Hayden. We will send you location information upon class sign-up.

This class is for kids who have either no or minimal amounts of flower gardening knowledge or experience.

Through hands-on and fun activities, students will learn the requirements to raise beautiful flowers.  The class will have some of the elements of the Seeds and Sprouts class but the focus will be more on flowers. As is the case with the other gardening classes, kids can expect to get their hands dirty and be active throughout the class.

The following is a synopsis of the class:

The Flowerbed 

  • The class will begin with plant reproduction and will include dissection of plants and seeds
  • Soil types and how to identify the type by feel & sight
  • Water sources will be explained and created in small scale examples
  • Slope and the importance of the variable will be explored        

Soil Preparation 

  • Explore what elements make up a flowerbed
  • Learn the importance of identifying the amount of sunlight required for different flowers
  • Examine elements such as water, temperature, and soil
  • Choose the correct flower and pot to fit a given situation
  • Demonstrate plant care including weed management, fertilizer and insects
  • Plant seeds and plants applying the concepts learned

Farmer Brown Goes Fishing

The students will meet me at a dock at a lake no longer than ½ hour away from CDA (will go to the closest place with the best chance of catching fish). Class will start at 9 AM and will be over at 1 PM.  We will only go out if it is a nice day!

Safety will be stressed throughout the class.  This will include water safety, hook injuries, and how to handle a spiney fish.

The following is a synopsis of the class:

  • Learn the parts of a fishing pole & reel and how to operate them
  • Tie a fishing knot, bait a hook & cast a line
  • Learn about common lures and how they are used
  • Identify different species of fish
  • Explore fishing regulations 
  • Clean and process the fish they catch
